A Sweet Free Chord Progression Video Coming Soon
As I mentioned in my article on how to become a better musician, every time I launch a new program I want to make sure that I’m providing as much value to the community as possible.
So, I like to create several free lessons and sample videos to help students learn jazz piano and pick up new tips to help their playing.
So, next week I’ll be posting a video showing you one of my favorite chord substitutions. Free.
When I first learned how to play this move it added a lot of sophistication to my playing. It’s a really tasty move. Plus, I’ll even show you how to use it inside the tune “Blue Bossa”.
Keep watching the site for the new lesson. If you’re on the FJL email list I’ll actually send you the lesson right to your inbox to make it easy for you!
In the meantime check out today’s jazz comping lesson video. Try out those chords, throw them in some tunes, and enjoy learning.
Sincerely,
Steve “Jazz Comping Chords In A Minor Key” Nixon
Love the new II VII Icomping video. I’m a premium member …. any chance the notations and jam track will end up in your Chords section?
Thanks Bill! I appreciate the support. You can use the jam tracks for Autumn Leaves, Summertime, Stella By Starlight, and several other Premium Membership tunes with these voicings. They’re already inside the course!
When playing against the jam tracks … do we replace major7 chords with minor 6/9 chords?
Hi Bill, no you’ll want to adjust the notes accordingly for the different quality chords. Check out Premium Membership’s chords library lesson #1 and #2 to see how to adjust the chords in this lesson for a major key.
II can’t find any reference to adjustments to substitute for Maj7 in a minor key. I watched the videos and read through the comments.
Sorry to bug you; but, please direct me to a position in the viseo or a comment
Hi Bill,
Would you mind writing a quick email into support inside the Premium site? My team will be happy to help you find the right lessons that will answer your question. That will make it easier for you. Thanks again.
Really love that you used II v I in minor. I do ok in major but weak in minor so this is perfect for me. Can’t wait to practice and work it out in other keys. You are so right about transposing, it really helps to make playing it second nature so when you come across that progression in a tune you just do it. Can’t wait for more videos on comping. Especially rhythm tips. Excited about your upcoming substitution chords video and learning more about The Jazz Platinum Players. Thanks for your hard work and dedication.
Thanks Donna. I love these chords too! Awesome that you’re going to work them out in a few keys. It will pay off! Happy to hear you’ll be joining us inside Platinum and i very much look forward to sharing music with you further.
Thank you so much! I’ve really been wondering about what to use while comping for a while and this was a really good place to start.
Great to hear it was helpful!
Great sounds! One question, when practicing these ii V i’s around a cycle, what’s the proper way to the next ii V i since the ii and the i are both minor?
The ii is not minor. It’s actually a minor 7 b5 chord. They are very different even though there’s only 1 note difference. Hope this helps!
I want to get my left hand to play counter melody – instead of just accompany for the right. Now I just sound like background music in a band.
How can I get to the soloist level of playing?
Hi Brian. Check out Brad Mehldau’s playing if you like the left hand counterpoint sound.
Thanks. He’s really good. I wish I could begin to sound like Dave McKenna or Nat Cole on piano – I’m never going to get there
Here’s a good quote Brian. “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t–you’re right.”
